Was going to get a duck at Morimoto's — had the whole evening pictured, been thinking about it since I got here — but the place is closed until May. Stood outside, re-read the notice, got sad for about ninety seconds, then pivoted and walked back to Suntory for what I'd already decided would be my last expensive meal of the trip.
Sat at the sushi bar and did the omakase. Missed photos of the first two courses because I ate them before I remembered my own rule — you live and you learn and you chew.
Sake Halibut skirt nigiri. It is the best thing that I didn't know existed. This tiny strip of flesh from right along the side of the fish — silkier than the fillet, with a faint buttery edge, brushed with a dab of something warm and salty and then that one grain of fresh wasabi on top. I asked the chef twice what it was called. I'll be chasing this for years.
Then, at the end, Sakura Plum Mochi. Real mochi, not the ice cream kind you get at Whole Foods. Handmade, just barely sweet, with a faint flower-and-plum thing going on that I can't really describe except to say it tasted exactly as pink as it looked. Paired with a thimble of warm sake. Walked out of there in a trance.
Will I remember the price of this meal? Yes, probably forever. Will I regret it? No.
